John Penrose MP officially opened Weston Super Mare AFC’s new 3G artificial football pitch facilities on the 1st June. The project, which was first planned in 2011, was funded by a £642,727 grant from the Premier League and The FA Facilities Fund, delivered by the Football Foundation.

The club’s previous natural turf pitch could not support the back-to-back fixtures and became unusable during the winter months.

Since 2000, the Football Foundation have invested 222 grants worth £9.6m towards grassroots projects worth £21m across the whole of Somerset.

John Penrose, MP for Weston-Super-Mare said:
“This new artificial football pitch is going to have such a positive effect on grassroots football for our area, through investment from the Premier League and the FA Facilities Fund. Weston-Super-Mare AFC will now be able to cater for more local youngsters getting involved in the game, thanks to the increased capacity their new artificial football pitch provides. I am honoured to officially unveil this brand-new 3G facility for them.”
