XVII COMMONWEALTH GAMES ATHLETICS TRACK

MCARDLE SPORT TEC WERE DELIGHTED TO BE SELECTED TO PROVIDE THE MAIN STADIUM’S ATHLETICS TRACK AT THE XVII COMMONWEALTH GAMES.

The Commonwealth Games is a world-class event and the XVII in Manchester was the most significant multi-sport event to be held in this country since the Olympics of 1948. It was the largest ever Commonwealth Games with more competitors than ever before from 72 nations and many of the world’s top athletes competing in individual and team events.

The opening of the Games represented for McArdle Sport Tec the culmination of more than twelve months work on the installation of the world class athletics track in the main stadium. Built in partnership with Laing O Rourke, the main contractor to Manchester City Council; McArdle Sport Tec had been originally selected because of our considerable knowledge and technical expertise in sports surface and athletics track construction.

Prior to the opening of the athletics track, the management team at McArdle Sport Tec said, “The opening of the games will mean a great deal to us; the games are being referred to as the ‘friendly games’ and this sentiment echoes the spirit in which all parties have worked together to make this a sporting success for this country. We are delighted to have been associated with this prestigious event and we look forward to watching many records being broken on our track installation”.

The athletics track system was provided in association with Mondo of Italy. Mark Freeman, Director of McArdle Sport Tec, said he had been “impressed by their support and technical resources”.

McArdle Sport Tec offer a range of athletics track systems for both international and regional level athletic competition, designed to provide for high wear even when exposed to high or low temperatures, and manufactured from ecologically sound products. We are able to install World Athletics certified track (previously known as IAAF) such as the Commonwealth Games facility or education establishments at a more affordable price, but always to the same exacting standards of installation as displayed at Manchester. We were extremely proud to have received very positive responses to the installation from those that have been involved in commissioning the stadium facility.

The successful hosting of these multi-sport games demonstrated to the world that the UK was more than capable of hosting events of such magnitude and this played a significant part in securing the 2012 Olympic Games for the city of London.
